For years, my professional look was conservative. My personality was not.
I have always loved color, sparkle, and a little bling. But during my 13 years as a paralegal, I worked in an environment where a polished, understated appearance felt like the right way to present myself. I knew how to dress and show up for that setting. The pink and purple part of me was still there; it just did not get much room.
Working in technology felt different. I met people with all kinds of styles and personalities: practical tech people, artists, wonderfully eclectic thinkers, and people who preferred to keep things traditional. There was more room for me to bring my own personality into my work.
Teaching gave that choice another meaning.
A Room That Helps Me Be Myself
When I work with students, I want them to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and showing me how they think. I have found that being a little different myself can help open that conversation. Purple hair, a colorful desk, or a toy in the background may give a student something easy to notice and talk about before we get to the harder work.
That has been especially meaningful in my work with students who learn differently. I pay attention to what helps each student feel at ease. Sometimes a visual detail gives us a point of connection. Sometimes a student would rather have a quieter background, and I respect that too.
My room does not have to look like a law office to be a serious place to work and teach. It can look like my place.
The Pink and Purple Conversion
I am slowly turning my room into the pink and purple office I have wanted for a long time. I am choosing desk pieces, storage, accessories, and little touches of bling as I go.
I say slowly because I want to enjoy the process. I still need a workspace that functions for teaching, writing, creating videos, and running my businesses. A purchase has to fit the room and make sense for how I use it. If it is beautiful but gets in the way every day, it probably will not stay.
Some choices are practical. Others simply make me happy when I walk into the room. I think there is space for both.
Why I’m Sharing the Purchases
I started Shopping Guru PhD to talk honestly about things I buy and use. My office is a natural part of that story. As it changes, I want to show the pieces I choose, what I paid attention to, and whether they actually work in my space.
You will see pink and purple finds. You will probably see a little sparkle. You will also hear when something looked better in a listing than it did on my desk, or when a cute storage solution turned out to be genuinely useful.
This is a room in progress, not a finished makeover staged for one perfect photograph. I think that makes it more useful—and more fun—to share.
A Dream Room in Progress
My room is still in transition, and I do not find the whole space visually attractive yet. Some corners feel like the pink and purple office I imagine; others are still waiting their turn. I am not going to pretend it is a finished makeover.
For now, I want to share the pieces I genuinely enjoy: a desk accessory, a storage find, a touch of sparkle, or a little area that is starting to feel like me. I can show you what works, what does not, and how my choices change as the room comes together.
Someday I may be ready to show the whole space. Right now, the story is about giving myself permission to create it.
