Choose stationery around how you work

Pens, notebooks and desk accessories should fit the job as well as the look. This is a practical starting guide; it does not imply that I have tested a particular pen or notebook.

• Writing comfort: consider grip shape, weight and whether a pen is comfortable for the length of your usual writing session.
• Ink and paper: check drying time, show-through and whether the paper suits the pen or highlighter you plan to use.
• Refills and replacement costs: compare the long-term cost and availability of refills rather than only the first purchase.
• Desk fit: measure the space for organizers and notebooks, including the room needed to open or use them.
• Useful quantities: a bundle only helps if you need its contents. Compare the cost of what you will actually use.
